REMEMBER THAT OPINION YOU HAD? THE ONE YOU'D SAID YOU'D HOLD ON TO EVEN AS YOU TAKE YOUR DYING BREATH?
It's gone now. It probably hasn't even hit you yet. Like that cereal you scarfed down obsessively every morning only to wake up one day and realise you never wanted to see it again. It doesn't even taste bad, you just outgrew it. That's how bookish opinions change. One day they're there, the next, they're not. It happens to the best of us and it's nothing to be ashamed of. (Though Golden Grahams are delicious... and I feel bad...)
That's why, today, I'll be talking about my bookish opinions and how they've changed!!
'KEEP YOUR BOOKS IN PRISTINE CONDITION FOREVER! EVEN AFTER YOU'VE READ THEM! NO CREASES, NO FOLDS!'
I lived by this. I'd hold my book with as much care as I would if I were holding a baby. Maybe even more. (Definitely a little more). But someone once told me, 'if they've had such an impact on you, why can't you have one on them?' and I haven't stopped thinking about it. It's true! Why can't I have an impact on them, no matter how small? Blew my mind...
I look at my bookshelves and I just... they look so NEW??? Why?? Because I've read them. But NO ONE would know that I have. And that's sad :( I want my books to look well-read! Warm! Toasty, even! Like breakfast!! And now I'm less hesitant when I crack a book a little too wide or read them upside down in bed. It's more relaxing, too! Now I can cry as my favourite characters are getting brutally murdered without set shoulders and a tense mindset. Everyone's happy this way! Except the person being murdered... don't think he's the happiest.
'BOOKS AREN'T DISPLAY PIECES, QUIT BUYING MULTIPLE EDITIONS'
Ha. They say 'don't judge a book by it's cover' and it's true! But! Covers can be super important. They catch your eye! Annnnd... bookstagram is very real and VERY pretty (no, really. Suddenly, I exist to stare at pretty covers and nothing else). So, sue me for wanting a lovely cover with all the colours and elaborate fonts. I want to take a picture of it and slap it everywhere while yelling about how good I thought the book was.
Does that mean I'll also suddenly end up with 57897 different colour coordinated props to complement my pretty book? Yes. Will I regret it? Ha no. Books don't have to have covers that could walk the runway if they wanted to, but if they do, who's complaining? I can have my cake and eat it, too.
'ALL YA NOVELS MUST INCLUDE ROMANCE OR I'LL SHRED IT'
Absolutely not! I'd much rather read a book with little to no romance than have characters tossed in just to make someone else's heart flutter. It's unnecessary. It's also messy. Like, no, move. You're wasting time that could've been spent, I don't know, furthering the plot??? Romance isn't BAD, but you can't shove a half-baked love story in there and call it a day. We wan't the book well-done, not under-cooked...
If it's done well, then romance is always welcome. But WHO said romance must be included in YA??? oh. me. I did. But not anymore!
'A SERIES WILL ALWAYS HAVE MORE DEPTH THAN A CONTEMPORARY'
The fact that this was genuinely an opinion that I held astounds me. Like??!?!! No. The impression that stand-alones are shallow because they can't effectively build worlds and include long, complex character arcs that turn your brain into an inconsistent slushie is WRONG. (Yes, I'm yelling at my own opinion. Let me live). Sure, series have multiple books and there's more room to experiment and include twists! And turns! And loop-de-loops! But contemporaries can do that, too. Lot's of emotion can be packed into something smol. I am a walking example! Character development, world-building and complex plots can be seen in stand-alones. So, shame on me.
'A TBR EXISTS FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF GROWING'
False. But it will. You can't stop it. It'll grow and grow until it towers over you. Until you mistake it for someone who stands 6 feet tall and wants to smother you as you sleep. Which it also might do depending on how much love and care you give it.
Sure, you could try to limit the number of books you add to it or, maybe, read some. But we all know that isn't happening. I was delusional. Good luck, everyone.
DID YOU HAVE ANY STEADFAST OPINIONS THAT YOU HELD ON TO UNTIL YOU JUST... DIDN'T? WHAT WERE THEY? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS!!
